Bacalar All Day Guided Tour
The experience
Bacalar sits inland from the more famous Caribbean beach towns of Quintana Roo, built around a freshwater lagoon so layered with shades of blue and green that locals call it the Lagoon of Seven Colors. This full-day guided excursion out of Cancun combines that lagoon with a string of deep cenotes and a slice of colonial history at the town's old fort, moving between swimming stops, a boat tour, and a meal along the way in one long but varied day trip.
The day opens at the Cenote Azul, where you get a full hour to swim before sitting down to breakfast, choosing from options like chilaquiles with chicken or beef, eggs prepared different ways, hotcakes, or a fruit plate. From there the group continues into Bacalar itself, starting with time at Beach Club Marmol before boarding a boat for a two-hour tour of the lagoon. On the water, you pass the Emerald Cenote, which drops 70 meters deep, and the Black Cenote, also called the Witch, which reaches 120 meters down, along with a channel once used by pirates and a cluster of small bird islands, and the itinerary builds in about 30 minutes of swimming directly in the lagoon during this stretch.
After the boat tour, the group breaks for lunch at a restaurant, with fish fillet and chicken fillet among the options, before the final stop at Fuerte de San Felipe, the old fort that anchors much of Bacalar's history. A brief explanation of the fort's significance is followed by photo time at the town's well-known Bacalar letters, and then the group begins the return drive to Cancun. Given that the round trip includes roughly five hours of driving each way built around the activities in Bacalar itself, this is a long day, and the tour's stated duration is designed to reflect that full span of travel time plus activities rather than just the time spent at each stop.
This tour suits travelers who are comfortable with a long day in a vehicle in exchange for covering a lot of ground that would otherwise require an overnight stay, and it works well for anyone who wants cenotes, a lagoon, and a bit of history combined into a single outing rather than booking separate excursions. The operator notes the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels and can accommodate dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free requests if flagged at booking, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries given the amount of time spent in transit and on the boat.
Because much of the day involves swimming, pack a swimsuit, towel, and sun protection, and life jackets for swimming are provided as part of the tour. Breakfast and lunch are included, along with an air-conditioned vehicle and a guide for the day, but drinks at the restaurant are not included and run around 70 pesos each, and there is a separate sanitation tax of about 50 pesos, or roughly 4 US dollars, that is not covered in the tour price.
Pickup is handled directly at your hotel if you are staying within the Cancun hotel zone or select areas of downtown Cancun; travelers outside those zones are assigned the nearest meeting point instead. Your guide or driver will look for you outside your hotel lobby or at the designated meeting point and will reach out by WhatsApp, text, or phone call if there is any trouble locating you or if you have questions about the pickup time or location, so keep your phone accessible on the morning of the tour. Infants are required to sit on an adult's lap for the ride, and public transportation options are noted as available nearby for those arranging their own way to a meeting point.
