Contoy Island & Mujeres island, snorkeling & lunch on the beach.
The experience
Off the northern tip of the Riviera Maya, two islands sit within reach of Cancun that most visitors never manage to see in a single day: Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres. This full-day boat expedition links them together, pairing a visit to a protected national park with time on one of the Caribbean coast's most beloved island towns, plus a stretch of snorkeling and a beach lunch in between.
The day is built around Contoy first. Because it is a national park with tightly controlled access, only a limited number of visitors are allowed onshore each day, which keeps the island free of the crowds and development found elsewhere along the coast. You'll spend roughly four hours here, walking soft white-sand beaches backed by mangroves and tropical scrub that shelter migratory and native bird species β Contoy has long been recognized as a sanctuary for birdlife, and its waters carry the same turquoise clarity the region is known for. Weather permitting, the group snorkels near where the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, begins just offshore, giving a first look at the coral and fish life that make this stretch of coastline so prized by divers and snorkelers alike.
From Contoy, the boat turns toward Isla Mujeres for a second, shorter chapter of about two hours. The pace shifts here from wilderness to island town: narrow streets lined with craft stalls, beach clubs, and small restaurants replace the empty sand of the morning. It's the natural spot to browse for souvenirs β jewelry, textiles, and local artwork are all sold along the market streets β or simply sit with a drink and watch the town's slower rhythm before heading back to the mainland.
This tour suits travelers who want a nature-forward day without giving up creature comforts: breakfast, lunch, and bottled water are all part of the package, and the itinerary is explicitly noted as suitable for all physical fitness levels, with infants and small children able to ride in a pram or stroller during the Isla Mujeres portion. It's not a high-adrenaline excursion β there's no rappelling or ziplining here β but rather a slower-paced, sightseeing-and-swimming day that appeals to families, birdwatchers, and anyone curious about a part of the Mexican Caribbean that stays largely undeveloped. Compared to standard Isla Mujeres ferry trips, the inclusion of Contoy's restricted-access park is the real differentiator, since independent travelers can't simply show up and visit on their own.
Snorkeling gear is covered: mask, snorkel, and fins are provided, along with an air-conditioned vehicle for any land transfers, so travelers mainly need to bring sun protection, a swimsuit, and a camera. Meals are included both as breakfast and lunch, along with bottled water throughout the day. Because the tour serves guests staying at different hotels along the coast, there's no fixed public meeting point; instead, the operator's team follows up after booking to arrange a pickup location based on where you're staying, and both departure and return times are treated as approximate around that plan. The only cost not folded into the package is noted simply as a final balance payment, so travelers should be prepared to settle that separately.
Because pregnant travelers are advised against joining β likely due to the boat transit and snorkeling component β this is best suited to guests without that restriction, but otherwise the low physical demands make it an accessible choice for multi-generational groups traveling together.
