The experience
Most visitors to the Yucatán never make it past Tulum and its immediate coastline, which is exactly what makes the drive north to Rio Lagartos worthwhile. This full-day tour covers roughly three hours each way from Tulum to reach a stretch of coast defined by pink lagoons, salt flats, and mangrove channels that hold one of the largest concentrations of pink flamingos in North America. It is a long day on the road, but the itinerary is built to make that distance pay off with a string of stops most travelers to the region never see.
The centerpiece of the day is a boat trip through the Rio Lagartos nature reserve, where a salt-water river cuts through dense mangrove forest. Hundreds of bird species and resident crocodiles share this ecosystem, and the boat route leads toward the breeding grounds where the flamingos gather. From the water you also reach the Las Coloradas pink lagoons, a striking landscape of saline pools tinted by the mineral content of the water, offering a different kind of scenery than the boat channels themselves.
Alongside the wildlife-watching, the tour builds in time in the fishing village of Las Coloradas itself, where the group walks the sandy streets and eats fresh catch straight from local fishermen. Because so few tour groups make it this far north, the village retains an unpolished, lived-in feel rather than a curated stop on a well-worn route. On the return drive to Tulum, the day winds down with a stop at a cenote, giving the group a chance to cool off and swim after a day spent mostly on a boat and in a vehicle.
This tour is built for travelers who want to trade a short, easy outing for a longer day that reaches genuinely less-visited terrain. The itinerary calls for at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or for pregnant travelers, given the boat travel and the length of the day. Photographers and birders in particular will find the combination of flamingo colonies, mangrove wildlife, and the pink lagoons hard to match elsewhere in the region.
Transportation is handled in an air-conditioned vehicle, with pickup included from accommodations within the immediate Tulum area; trips originating outside that zone carry an additional transportation fee that can be quoted on request. Because pickup timing depends on where you are staying, the operator's confirmation email carries your actual pickup time and should be checked rather than relying on the automatic booking confirmation. If your hotel or apartment doesn't appear in the standard pickup list when booking, you can enter your own pickup location instead.
Snacks and lunch are provided over the course of the day, so you don't need to plan for meals beyond personal preferences, though gratuities are not included and are left to your discretion. Given the mix of boat time, walking in the village, and a swim stop at the cenote, it's worth dressing for sun and water exposure and bringing anything you'd want for a day spent largely outdoors. Public transportation options are also available near the pickup area for travelers who want an alternative to the included transfer.
