Guided Day Tour to Chichén Itzá, Cenote Swim and Valladolid
The experience
A full day dedicated to one of Mexico's most recognized archaeological sites, this guided tour pairs a visit to Chichén Itzá with a swim at a Yucatán cenote and a stop in the colonial town of Valladolid. It runs as a group excursion aboard an air-conditioned panoramic bus, with pickup from Tulum or nearby hotels, and is built around three distinct stops rather than a single-site visit, giving travelers a broader sense of the region beyond the ruins themselves.
The day starts with hotel pickup, followed by a roughly three-hour bus ride across the Yucatán Peninsula, during which certified guides who specialize in archaeology and Mayan culture share background on the region as the landscape rolls by. Arrival at Chichén Itzá kicks off a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, walking through its most significant structures with commentary from the bilingual guide, followed by unstructured time to wander the grounds independently, take photographs, and look closer at details the group pace might otherwise skip past.
From the archaeological site, the group travels to the Saamal cenote, one of the natural sinkhole pools the Yucatán is known for, where there's time to swim in its clear water or simply relax at the edge before sitting down to a buffet lunch featuring regional Mayan dishes. The last stop is Valladolid, a colonial town where the group gets a brief walk through the historic center to take in the cobblestone streets and architecture before the drive back to the hotel.
This tour suits travelers who want the highlights of the region covered in one organized outing rather than arranging separate trips to the ruins, a cenote, and a town visit. Because it's described as suitable for all physical fitness levels, it works for a wide range of travelers, though the itinerary notes it isn't set up for those using wheelchairs, canes, walkers, or crutches, since the vehicles aren't adapted for that and the sites involve cobblestone and uneven ground. Families traveling with infants should note that infants are required to sit on an adult's lap during transport.
Bring a swimsuit and a towel for the cenote, along with comfortable footwear for walking around the archaeological site and Valladolid's cobblestone streets. The buffet lunch is included and can be adjusted for dietary restrictions if the operator is notified in advance, but drinks at the restaurant are not included in the base price. Also excluded is the Mayan Archaeological Zone Tax and Cenote Maintenance Tax, listed at 765 MXN per person, which travelers should plan to pay separately.
Pickup for travelers staying in Tulum is arranged either at the Super Akí Tulum supermarket, with a daily meeting time of 9:30 AM, or directly at the hotel if it's on the operator's pickup list. Guests staying outside Tulum can also be picked up at their hotel where available. What's included covers the round-trip transportation in the panoramic bus, the bilingual guided tour of Chichén Itzá with free time on-site, the cenote visit with swimming, the buffet lunch, the Valladolid stop, and the accompanying certified guide throughout the day.
