Magic Sian ka'an Deluxe two boats
The experience
South of Tulum, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve stretches across lagoons, mangrove forests, and open Caribbean water, and this full-day boat safari is built to move through nearly all of it. Departing by boat and covering close to 300 minutes on the water plus a stop for lunch, the tour circles the Punta Allen peninsula, swapping between two different boats to match the terrain — flat lagoon in the first half, open sea and reef in the second.
The day begins with a drive by minivan through the reserve's entrance arch and a short stretch of unpaved road through the jungle before reaching a pier on the edge of the Campechen lagoon. There, a local captain takes over, guiding the boat through mangrove-lined canals in search of crocodiles, birds, and manatees on the way toward the fishing village of Punta Allen. Along this stretch, the mangroves themselves — a mix of red and black — frame the route as much as any wildlife sighting does.
At Punta Allen, travelers switch to a second boat for the more open-water half of the trip: cruising past breaking waves while watching for dolphins and sea turtles, then snorkeling over a section of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-longest coral reef system in the world. Underwater, the reef shows off brain corals in green and yellow tones and fan corals in purple, and the tour also builds in time in the naturally colored pools the area is known for, where the group can relax before continuing on.
Because the day runs long and covers two distinct environments, it suits travelers who want a slower, more immersive nature excursion rather than a quick reef stop — it's marked as suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers, those with spinal injuries, or poor cardiovascular health, and children need to stay with an adult throughout. The scale of the itinerary, from mangrove tracking to open-sea wildlife watching to reef snorkeling in a single outing, sets it apart from shorter single-stop boat tours in the region.
Lunch is part of the package and served at a restaurant in Punta Allen run by local fishermen, with a buffet spread and, between July and February, freshly caught lobster on offer. Bottled water, additional beverages including Jamaican water and Coke, and snacks are included, along with snorkeling equipment and a professional guide throughout the day. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase separately, and gratuities are not part of the included price.
After lunch, there's a roughly 15-minute walk through the village of Punta Allen before returning to the lagoon pier where the captain waits to bring the group back. Hotel pickup should be confirmed with the operator at the time of booking, and the excursion depends on favorable weather — if conditions force a cancellation, travelers are offered either an alternative date or a full refund.
