Magical Tour Las Coloradas Natural Pink Lagoon from Riviera Maya

Magical Tour Las Coloradas Natural Pink Lagoon from Riviera Maya

North of the Yucatan Peninsula, past the fishing town of Rio Lagartos, salt evaporation ponds turn a startling shade of rose under the right light, and this full-day outing from the Riviera Maya is built entirely around getting you there and back. It combines a boat trip through a biosphere reserve, a stop at the pink lagoon itself, a traditional mud treatment, a swim, and a seafood meal prepared by residents of the town, making it as much a study of a working coastal community as it is a photo opportunity.

The day opens with the drive north to Las Coloradas, where the pink lake sits within a landscape of shallow salt pans. Guides note that the intensity of the color shifts with the angle of the sun, so the soft tone you see in the morning will look different than it does by late afternoon. From there the group heads to the Rio Lagartos reserve for a boat ride of roughly two and a half hours through mangrove channels, where sightings can include flamingos, pelicans, herons, eagles, and crocodiles moving through their natural habitat, along with an explanation of how the surrounding salt ponds are formed.

Back on land, the itinerary shifts to a hands-on wellness stop: a Mayan mud bath, in which travelers apply mineral-rich mud from nearby mounds to the skin before rinsing off with a swim in freshwater. The day closes with a meal centered on local seafood, cooked by residents of the fishing village, giving the group a taste of the regional cuisine that grows out of this same coastline and lagoon system.

The pace suits travelers who want a slower, nature-and-culture day over an adrenaline-heavy one — birdwatchers, photographers chasing the shifting pink hues, and anyone curious about small-scale salt production and coastal Maya food traditions. Because the boat ride, mud bath, and freshwater swim all involve some walking over uneven ground and getting in and out of a boat, it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant, though it is otherwise described as suitable for all fitness levels.

Pack biodegradable sunscreen and sunglasses, since the salt flats offer little shade, and bring a swimsuit, towel, and a change of clothes for the mud bath and freshwater rinse. The published inclusions cover one dish of your choice at the seafood meal, the mud exfoliation, the boat ride through the biosphere reserve, a box lunch (sandwich, juice, apple) with a bottle of water, and round-trip hotel pickup and drop-off from the Riviera Maya, along with the visits to Las Coloradas and the Rio Lagartos reserve. Restaurant beverages and a local preservation tax of 25 USD per person for Rio Lagartos are not included and should be budgeted for separately.

Pickup is organized by zone rather than door to door for every property: travelers staying in downtown hotels or Airbnbs, or anywhere the vehicle cannot reach directly, are asked to meet at a fixed point — in Cancun, in front of the Smart Cancun by Oasis lobby on Tulum Avenue; in Playa del Carmen, at Coco Bongo; and in Tulum, at the main gate of the Super Aki market on the federal avenue, since no hotel or Airbnb pickup is offered there. Pickup times are set according to location and start at 6:00 am, so anyone who has not provided a pickup point in advance is asked to contact the operator promptly. Given the distances involved, the day can run beyond 12 hours depending on hotel location and traffic, so it is worth clearing the full day and getting rest the night before.
