Akumal Bay is one of the few places on the Riviera Maya where green sea turtles feed close to shore in numbers steady enough that a snorkeler can expect to find them on almost any visit, and this private, full-day outing is built around that fact. Rather than folding a quick turtle stop into a crowded multi-stop bus tour, this itinerary pairs the bay with two very different cenotes hidden in the jungle inland, giving you a private guide, GoPro photos of the highlights, and roughly six hours to move through saltwater and freshwater environments at a manageable pace.

The day starts at the Pizza Leo restaurant, where your accredited guide meets you before driving to Akumal Bay. Once there you're fitted with an access bracelet and mandatory snorkeling gear, and the guide runs through the site's rules before you head into the water for about an hour. That stretch is dedicated to the bay's wildlife: turtles grazing on seagrass, rays gliding over the sandy bottom, and the tropical fish that share the same shallow reef.

From the bay, it's a short ten-minute drive to the first cenote, an open-air sinkhole with clear water and a jumping platform for anyone who wants to leap in rather than climb down the ladder. After time to swim and photograph the site, the group drives roughly twenty minutes further to a second, very different cenote housed inside a cave. Here you descend about five meters underground before reaching the water, where you can snorkel through chambers the ancient Maya regarded as an entrance to the underworld, tracing the underground rivers that carved the cave over millennia. With time to enjoy both cenotes built into the schedule, the drive back to the starting point closes out the excursion.

Because the tour is private, it works well for travelers who want their own pace rather than syncing with a busload of strangers, and the operator notes it's suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it isn't recommended for anyone with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, given the cave descent and the swimming involved in each stop. Families, couples, and small groups who want three distinct ecosystems, open bay, open cenote, and cave cenote, condensed into one outing without doubling back to a hotel in between will get the most out of it.

Snorkeling equipment is provided and included, along with bottled water, lunch, and GoPro photos of the day's best moments, so you don't need to bring your own mask or fins. Pickup is arranged directly from your hotel lobby; the operator only needs your hotel name, room number, and lobby name to coordinate the pickup. A tip for the guide is not included in the tour price, so it's worth keeping that in mind separately. Public transportation options are also available near the meeting point for anyone who prefers to make their own way there.

Pack a swimsuit, a change of clothes, and reef-safe sunscreen if you have it, since the day alternates between saltwater and freshwater swimming with driving in between. Because part of the route runs through jungle roads to reach the cave cenote, closed-toe water shoes can make the walk to and from the water easier, and a dry bag is useful for phones or wallets you want to keep close during the transfers.
