Private Tulum and Cenotes Experience

Tulum's archaeological zone sits on a bluff above the Caribbean, its walls and watchtowers still tracing the outline of a walled Maya city, and this private tour pairs a visit there with an afternoon spent swimming through cenotes nearby. The visit begins at the Tulum ruins, widely considered one of the best-preserved Maya sites on the Quintana Roo coast thanks to its position facing the sea. The guide spends about two hours walking the group through the complex, pointing out the wall that encloses the site on its north, south, and west sides, the two watchtowers, and the five entrances, while the eastern edge opens straight onto the Caribbean.

The second half of the day, roughly three hours, is given over to cenotes. The itinerary includes four of them, two open-air and two semi-open, and the guide explains what a cenote actually is geologically before handing out snorkel gear for each stop. From there it's a matter of swimming, floating, and taking in the rock formations at a pace the group sets for itself. Travelers who want to extend the day with a meal out can do so; the guide will take the group to eat, with the bill covered separately by the traveler.

Because the pace and stops are set by the group, this tour suits families, couples, or small groups who'd rather not follow a fixed group schedule, and it's flagged as suitable for all physical fitness levels, with infants able to ride in a stroller or on a lap.
