Puerto Morelos Half-Day Snorkel Tour
The experience
Puerto Morelos sits quietly between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, a fishing village that has kept its slower pace even as the coast around it filled with resorts. This half-day tour brings you to the town and out onto the water for a guided snorkeling trip along the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, with round-trip transportation from your hotel built into the plan.
The day begins with a pickup from your hotel or an assigned meeting point, followed by the ride into Puerto Morelos. From there you board a boat headed for the National Reef Park, the protected marine zone that runs parallel to the town's shoreline. The reef here is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and once you're in the water you get roughly 45 minutes to swim among it, looking for the fish, coral formations, and other marine life that gather along the reef wall. Sea turtles turn up in these waters too, though sightings aren't guaranteed on any given trip.
Snorkeling gear is provided, so there's no need to arrive with your own mask and fins, and snacks are included to keep you fueled between the boat ride and the swim. The operator runs two departure windows each day, one in the morning and one around midday, with pickup times that shift depending on which zone your hotel falls in β Cancun and Playa del Carmen guests are collected earlier in each window than those staying in Tulum.
This outing suits travelers who want a taste of reef snorkeling without committing to a full-day excursion or advanced diving certification. Because the boat ride and swim make up the core of the experience, it works well for couples, small groups, or families who are comfortable in open water; note that infants must sit on an adult's lap and the tour is not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or who is pregnant, given the physical demands of getting in and out of the boat and swimming against light currents. A moderate level of fitness is recommended for everyone joining.
Because pickup points vary by hotel, it's worth confirming your accommodation with the operator ahead of time; if your hotel isn't on the standard list, a representative will reach out separately to arrange the exact meeting point and time. Travelers based in Tulum are directed to a fixed meeting spot at the Super Aki supermarket downtown rather than a hotel pickup, so plan your own transportation to that location accordingly.
Snorkeling equipment, entry to the National Reef Park, snacks, and air-conditioned transport are covered in the price, but a few costs are left to travelers to handle on-site: lockers run an additional five dollars if you want to store belongings, food and drinks beyond the included snacks are on your own tab, and there's a separate marine life conservation fee charged locally in Puerto Morelos. Bring swimwear, a change of clothes, and reef-safe sunscreen if you have it, since you'll be spending a good part of the day on and in the water.
