Sian Ka'an Biosphere Ancient Canals Expedition
The experience
A short drive south of Tulum, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve opens up into a labyrinth of lagoons, mangroves, and channels that once carried Mayan traders between the Caribbean coast and the inland community of Muyil. This UNESCO World Heritage site sees a fraction of the visitors that crowd Tulum's beaches, and this expedition is built around that contrast: a slow-moving journey by boat and current through a landscape that still feels largely untouched.
The day traces the same water route the Mayans used centuries ago, moving through three connected bodies of water — Muyil, Chunyaxche, and Capelchen lagoons — linked by narrow freshwater channels. Along the way stands the temple of Ixlapak, tucked among the canals and lagoons at the heart of the reserve, once used by the Mayans as an astral observatory. The boat ride carries travelers across Muyil lagoon, Chunyaxche, and into the ancient canal itself, with the surrounding water shifting between four distinct ecosystems as mangroves give way to open lagoon and back again.
The signature part of the experience is floating: drifting with the current through the clear freshwater channels, life jacket on, with nothing to do but watch the mangrove-lined banks pass by. It's a passive, meditative stretch of the day, and it's also prime wildlife-watching territory — manatees, crocodiles, and a range of aquatic birds all make their home in this reserve, and keeping an eye on the water and banks can turn up sightings of any of them going about their routines undisturbed.
This is a good fit for travelers who want distance from Tulum's beach clubs and tour buses without sacrificing comfort, and who are drawn more to quiet nature immersion than to adrenaline. A moderate level of physical fitness is expected, and the excursion is not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries or for pregnant travelers, so it suits an able-bodied adult traveler more than families with very young children or those with mobility concerns. Compared to typical Tulum boat tours that stick to the coastline, this one goes inland along a historic freshwater route, which is its main point of difference.
Included in the day are lunch at the operator's Community Center, bottled water throughout, and the use of lockers and life jackets, along with the guided boat ride across the lagoons and ancient canal. A breakfast at the start of the day and a fresh local meal afterward round out the food included in the package, so travelers don't need to plan meals around the outing. The Federal Fee INAH charged for entry to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere is not included and should be budgeted for separately.
Pickup is arranged directly with your hotel or accommodation, so have the name and address ready when booking or communicating with the operator. Transfer service is complimentary for guests staying within Tulum Pueblo or along the Boca Paila Road Hotel Zone; anyone staying outside those areas will need to request a separate quotation for pickup, since those transfers carry an additional charge.
