The most exciting Snorkel Tour at El Cielo reef. Discover the sky in the sea.
The experience
Cozumel's reputation as one of Mexico's premier snorkeling destinations rests largely on its coral reefs, and this full-day boat excursion is built around three of the island's best-known sites, closing with the shallow, sand-bottomed waters of El Cielo, a spot famous for the starfish visible just beneath the surface. Rather than a single stop, the day is structured as a progression through different reef environments before ending at a stretch of beach for open time.
After pickup from your hotel, the group travels to Playa del Carmen to catch the ferry across to Cozumel, a crossing of about half an hour. Once on the island, you board the tour boat and head out into the Caribbean Sea to begin the snorkeling itself, starting at the Palancar and Colombia reefs, where coral formations and schools of colorful fish fill the underwater scenery. From there, the boat continues to El Cielo, the trip's signature stop, where the water is shallow and remarkably clear, letting you hover above white sand scattered with starfish. Handling the starfish or lifting them from the water isn't permitted, since doing so can harm them, so this stop is about observation rather than interaction.
Snorkeling gear is provided for use throughout, and the day includes a breakfast box lunch along with a dish of your choosing and two drinks per person while on the boat, plus a visit to El Cielito Beach with free time built in to explore Cozumel on your own before the return crossing. Travelers should note that reef access can shift with conservation needs: during a prior closure of the Palancar and Colombia reefs for marine life protection, the operator substituted Xhul Ha and Palancar (Herradura) instead, so the exact reefs visited can vary depending on conservation status at the time of your visit.
This is a good fit for travelers with at least moderate physical fitness who are comfortable in open water for an extended stretch, given the tour runs a full 720 minutes door to door. It is not recommended for those with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnant travelers, and infants must sit on an adult's lap during transport. Compared to shorter reef snorkel trips, this one stands out for combining multiple named reef sites with a beach stop and free time in Cozumel, making it suited to travelers who want a full day on and around the water rather than a quick swim-and-return outing. Public transportation options are also available nearby for those weighing alternatives to the included pickup.
What's covered includes the ferry ticket and boat ride, snorkeling equipment, the box lunch breakfast with a choice of dish, two drinks per person on the boat, and time at El Cielito Beach. Not included are drinks ordered at the restaurant, taxi transport back to the dock, and Cozumel's marine conservation fee, so budget for those separately.
Pickup is arranged directly with your hotel, and if your accommodation isn't on the operator's standard list, you're asked to notify them in advance so a representative can reach out and confirm the exact pickup time and place, since schedules differ by hotel and are communicated by email or text ahead of the tour.
