Tour to Las Coloradas Pink Waters and Boat Ride in Rio Lagartos with Lunch.
The experience
Northeast of Cancun, past the fishing town of Rio Lagartos, the coastline turns a shade of pink that looks almost artificial until you're standing in front of it. This full-day outing combines a visit to the salt lagoons of Las Coloradas with a boat tour through the mangrove channels of Rio Lagartos, and it's built around wildlife spotting, open water, and a sit-down lunch rather than any single big-ticket activity. Hotel pickup in Cancun or the Riviera Maya starts the day, with the drive out taking three to four hours each way.
The first stop is Las Coloradas itself, where the lagoon gets its color from a high concentration of salt and microscopic algae that can tint the water yellow, orange, or a vivid pink depending on the sun and where the salt harvest currently stands. Guides walk the group through how the salt is actually extracted here, in what is one of the country's largest salt-producing regions, and point out flamingos feeding along the flats. Getting in the water isn't an option at this stop, since swimming is prohibited and the high salinity can irritate skin, so this part of the visit is about looking, photographing, and learning rather than wading in.
From there the group boards a boat for the Rio Lagartos leg, weaving through canals and lagoons lined with mangroves. This is where the birdlife really opens up: cormorants, ospreys, herons, pelicans, frigate birds, geese, and, with some luck, more flamingos all turn up along the route, and the crocodile sanctuary gives everyone a look at crocodiles in a more contained setting. Lunch follows at a restaurant, where each guest picks a dish from the menu, before the drive back toward Cancun.
The pace here suits families and travelers who'd rather observe nature at a relaxed clip than push through an adrenaline-heavy itinerary, and the additional information notes it's suitable for all physical fitness levels, with infants allowed as long as they sit on an adult's lap. Compared to tours that lean on adventure sports, this one is built around two contrasting landscapes, a working salt flat and a mangrove wetland, seen back to back in a single day, which is what sets it apart from a straightforward beach or cenote excursion.
Included in the price is round-trip transportation, the boat tour in Rio Lagartos, entry to Las Coloradas and the crocodile farm, a bottle of water, and a box lunch of a sandwich, fruit, juice, and cookie, on top of the restaurant meal where you choose your dish. Left out are drinks at the restaurant, dinner, and the federal port tax charged at Las Coloradas; there's also an optional viewpoint that runs an extra $8 USD per person if you want to add it.
Because pickup times run only between 7:00 and 7:30 in the morning and vary by hotel, you'll want to list your hotel name in the special requirements box or flag it by email so a company representative can confirm your exact pickup slot by message beforehand. It's worth noting the operator's own advisory: during the salt harvest window from July 19 to August 19, the pink tone at Las Coloradas fades noticeably, so anyone touring in that stretch should expect a paler lagoon than the photos typically show.
