Underwater Photography Experience in Mexico's Sacred Cenotes
The experience
Set inside one of Mexico's sacred cenotes, this underwater photography experience turns a swim into a guided art session, blending free-diving technique, breathwork, and a professional photoshoot into a single 150-minute activity. Rather than simply visiting a cenote to look at it, participants are coached into moving through the water with intention, resulting in a portfolio of edited images that capture the cenote's light and stillness alongside the swimmer.
The session begins on dry land with guided meditation and breathwork designed to slow the body down and sync it with the rhythm of the water before anyone gets in the cenote. From there, the focus shifts to technique: a photographer and guide walk participants through free-diving and underwater modeling basics, covering how to hold a pose, move fluidly, and stay comfortable below the surface. This groundwork matters because the photography that follows depends on being able to move gracefully rather than just float or splash.
With the fundamentals in place, the group moves into the shoot itself, working through up to three distinct underwater looks. Flowing fabric, props, and a flowy dress are provided to build each scene, and the photographer captures the interplay of light, movement, and emotion as swimmers pose beneath the surface of the cenote's mineral-rich water. Afterward, the images go through a full editing pass, and participants come away with more than 30 edited photographs preserving the shoot.
This experience is built for anyone curious about underwater imagery rather than for strong swimmers only — it's listed as suitable for all physical fitness levels, and infants and small children can be brought along in a pram or stroller, with infants sitting on an adult's lap when needed. What separates it from a typical cenote swim or snorkel tour is the creative angle: instead of exploring the cenote as a sightseeing stop, the session is structured entirely around composing and capturing underwater portraits, complete with wardrobe, props, and professional editing.
Because this is a photoshoot as much as a swim, a mask or goggles for the cenote are provided as part of the package, along with the flowy dress and the fabrics and props used to style each underwater look. The cenote entrance fee is included too, so there's no separate ticket to arrange once you arrive. Snacks are provided during the session, useful for refueling between the breathwork, the technique coaching, and the multiple looks captured in the water.
For meeting logistics, the group gathers outside a grocery store before heading together to the cenote used for the shoot, and public transportation options are available nearby for those making their own way there. The itinerary doesn't specify additional gear to pack beyond what's provided, so beyond swimwear for under the dress, most of the specialized equipment — from the underwater looks to the photo editing — is handled as part of the included package.
