2 cenote divings (including one deep diving) for advanced divers in Tulum

Tulum's cenotes hide more than shallow swimming holes: beneath the jungle floor lie flooded caverns strung with stalactites and stalagmites that took thousands of years to form. This tour is built for divers who already hold an Advanced (level 2) certification and want to go past the surface light zone into two of these underground chambers, with one of the two dives taken to depth. Operated by La Calypso, it's a technical, guided cavern experience rather than an introductory swim.

Once you're kitted out with the SCUBA gear supplied for the day, including 5 mm wetsuits and dive lights, your guide leads you into the first cenote. Cavern diving here is set up with safety as a structural feature of the route itself: passages stay close to an exit, air pockets are spaced along the way, and natural light is kept in view for most of the swim so the environment never feels fully sealed off. Between the two formations you might spot limestone columns built up over millennia, fossil deposits, traces of prehistoric bone, small native fish and invertebrates, and, in some cenotes, the shimmering optical line where fresh and salt water meet without fully mixing, known as the halocline.

The second dive is the deep one, which is where the Advanced certification requirement matters most. Descending further into the cavern system changes the light, the temperature, and the scale of the formations around you, and your guide manages the group's positioning and air accordingly throughout. Between the geology and the play of natural light filtering down from cenote openings above, the two dives are meant to feel distinct from each other rather than a repeat of the same swim at different depths.

This is a tour for certified, experienced divers rather than a casual add-on for beginners. It's not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, or asthma, and it isn't recommended for pregnant travelers. Moderate physical fitness is expected, and everyone is required to complete a health questionnaire before entering the water. Divers should also know that diving within 24 hours of a flight isn't advised, so this is worth scheduling with your arrival or departure day in mind.

SCUBA equipment, cenote entrance fees, round-trip transportation between the dive center and the cenotes, and a driver/guide are all included, so once you reach the dive center the logistics of getting to and from the sites are handled. Lunch and breakfast are not included, and hotel pick-up and drop-off are excluded as well, so plan to eat beforehand and arrange your own way to the dive center, keeping in mind public transportation options are available nearby.

Because this is a two-tank cavern dive with a deep component, proof of Advanced (or Open Water plus a deep specialty) certification is checked before you're allowed in the water, and the tour is described as taking about five hours in total. Given the setting, once you begin the dive there are no refunds, so this is best booked by divers who are confident in their certification level and physical readiness rather than those still deciding whether cavern diving is for them.
