Dos Ojos Cenote Cavern Dive- The Barbie Line and The Bat Cave

Dos Ojos takes its name from the pair of circular cenotes that sit side by side in the jungle south of Tulum, their surfaces reading like two eyes staring up out of the limestone. It is one of the most recognized cenote systems anywhere, and this outing is built specifically for cavern diving rather than open-water snorkeling, giving certified divers a guided route through two distinct sections of the flooded passageways.

The first route, known as the Barbie Line, is prized for how light travels through the system. Sunbeams filter down through the openings in the rock and scatter across water so clear it can feel like moving through glass, illuminating stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that formed over thousands of years before the caverns flooded. Divers move along this guided line taking in formations that shift in character with every few meters of passage.

The second route, the Bat Cave Line, changes the rhythm of the dive. Partway through, the line leads divers up into a large air dome inside the rock where it's possible to surface and look up at a ceiling occupied by hundreds of resident bats, some hanging still and others in motion overhead, before the dive continues back into the submerged passages. Having both lines included on the same outing means the dive covers two very different moods of the same cenote system in one session.

This is an experience for certified divers who already have SCUBA training and are comfortable in overhead cavern environments, since the routes run beneath rock rather than open sky for stretches of the dive. The operator notes it requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness and is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers, so it suits divers in good general health looking for a technically interesting cavern dive rather than a casual first-time try. What sets it apart from a single-line cenote dive is the combination of two contrasting routes, light-filled formations on one and a bat-filled air dome on the other, in a single visit.

Private transportation to and from the site is included, along with use of SCUBA equipment for the dive itself, so divers don't need to arrange their own gear or figure out how to reach Dos Ojos independently. Fruit, a granola bar, and drinking water are provided to keep energy up between the two dive segments. Public transportation options are also available near the site for those who want an alternative route, and service animals are permitted. If traveling with an infant, note that infants are required to sit on an adult's lap during transport. With a duration of around five hours, the day allows time for both routes to be dived at a comfortable pace rather than rushed back to back.
