Private Underground River Tour with Snorkeling

Tulum sits between two very different worlds of water: the open turquoise of the Caribbean and the hidden limestone rivers that run beneath the jungle floor. This private half-day tour lets you experience both, pairing a snorkel session in the sea near Tankah Bay with a guided walk through a 600-meter cave system carved by an underground river. It is built for travelers who want the reef and the cenote in a single outing rather than choosing between them.

The day begins with snorkeling along the second largest reef in the world, right off Tankah Bay, where your guide leads you through the shallows to take in the coral and marine life without the crowds of a larger group excursion. From there the tour shifts underground, entering a cave that stretches 600 meters through the limestone bedrock that defines this stretch of the Yucatan Peninsula. Inside, the formations slow you down on their own: stalactites, stalagmites, and other mineral shapes built up over thousands of years line the passage, and your guide explains what these cenotes have meant historically and culturally to the region, not just how they were formed geologically.

Because the tour is private, the pace bends around your group rather than a fixed schedule, whether that means lingering at the reef a little longer or spending extra time examining a particular rock formation in the cave. A guide stays with you throughout both segments, and lunch is built into the day, so there is no need to plan around a separate meal stop.

This experience suits travelers who want an active but not extreme day on the water and underground, comfortable swimming and wading through a cave environment. It works well for couples, families, or small private groups who prefer a guided, unhurried pace over a large-group snorkel boat. Because it combines two distinct ecosystems, the reef and the cenote cave, it offers more variety than a standard single-site snorkel or cenote outing, while keeping the day to a half-day commitment.

Pack a bathing suit, a hat, sunglasses, and a camera, and bring cash, since many local vendors in the area only accept it. An extra t-shirt is worth having on hand for after the cave portion. If sunscreen or insect repellent is needed, only biodegradable versions are appropriate given the sensitivity of the cenote ecosystem. Hotel pickup and drop-off within Tulum are included, and the confirmation email from the operator will specify your exact pickup time, since it depends on where you are staying; pickups outside the immediate Tulum area, such as Puerto Aventuras, Playa del Carmen, or the Cancun area, carry additional per-person fees. All entrance fees, transportation between sites, necessary equipment, bottled water, a professional guide, and lunch are included, and life vests are provided and mandatory for the boat portion. Gratuities are not included and are left to your discretion.
