For certified divers, the cenotes around Tulum offer a kind of diving that looks nothing like the open ocean — submerged caverns lit by shafts of natural light, limestone formations built up over millennia, and water so clear it barely seems to be there. This two-tank cenote diving trip, run by La Calypso, takes certified divers into these underground chambers for a pair of dives designed around comfort and safety rather than depth or difficulty.

Both dives take place in caverns with easy access, meaning you're always within reach of an exit and near natural light rather than pushing into deep, enclosed passages. All the specialized gear is provided, including underwater lights and 5mm wetsuits suited to the cooler cenote water, so you can focus on the experience rather than logistics. As you move through the caverns, expect to pass stalactites and stalagmites, rock columns, fossils, and other limestone formations built up over thousands of years, along with native aquatic species that make their home in these freshwater systems.

One of the more distinctive elements of cenote diving is the halocline, the visible boundary where fresh water meets a denser saltwater layer below — a phenomenon divers describe as genuinely unusual to witness firsthand. Which specific cenote you dive in shapes what you see, since the formations and species vary from one site to another, but the operator structures every dive with an emphasis on space and clear sightlines to the surface or exit points.

This trip is built specifically for divers who already hold at least an Open Water certification, since evidence of certification is required before diving and the dives are not open to beginners. Non-certified companions aren't left out entirely, though — they're able to join for a dive at Casa cenote alongside certified divers. Beyond the certification requirement, this is a fitness-friendly outing suitable for divers across activity levels, though it isn't recommended for anyone with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, asthma, or for pregnant travelers, given the demands of scuba diving in enclosed spaces.

The trip includes cenote entrance fees, use of full SCUBA equipment, a driver and guide, all applicable fees and taxes, and transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle. Lunch, breakfast, and hotel pickup and drop-off are not included, so plan to eat beforehand and arrange your own way to the departure point.

Before booking, keep a few health and safety notes in mind: diving within 12 hours of a flight isn't advised, and every participant is required to fill out a health questionnaire before entering the water, since certain pre-existing conditions may rule out diving and are worth discussing with a doctor beforehand. Public transportation options are available near the area for reaching the meeting point, and as with any dive operation, once you're in the water and the dive is underway, the outcome of the experience is not the responsibility of the guide or the diving center, and refunds are not issued after that point.
