Chichen Itza with Cenote Suytun and Cenote Ikkil From Tulum

This full-day excursion from Tulum links three of the Yucatán's signature stops — the ruins of Chichen Itza, two cenotes, and the colonial town of Valladolid — into a single guided outing with round-trip transportation. It's built for travelers who want the region's biggest archaeological site paired with a swim, rather than choosing one or the other, and the itinerary runs on the longer side to fit it all in without feeling rushed at any single stop.

The day opens at Chichen Itza with a bilingual, certified guide leading a tour of the site, including the towering El Castillo pyramid, before travelers are given an additional hour of free time to wander the grounds independently and take photos at their own pace. From there, the group heads to Cenote Ik Kil, a jungle-ringed sinkhole hung with vines where swimmers descend into cool, clear water for about an hour. A life vest is mandatory here, keeping the swim accessible even for those who aren't strong swimmers.

The second cenote stop is Suytun, known for the stone platform that juts into its pool beneath a shaft of natural light — a spot travelers get an hour to explore, photograph, and swim in. Along the way, a Mexican buffet meal and drinks during transportation are included, so there's no need to plan separately for food during the long day on the road. The tour then winds down with a 25-minute stop in Valladolid's central park, a brief window to walk the plaza, pick up a snack, or simply take in the town before heading back to Tulum.

Because the day covers a lot of ground — extensive walking at Chichen Itza, two separate cenote swims, and hours of transit between sites — it suits travelers who are comfortable with a packed schedule and don't mind spending a good part of the day in transit between stops. It's noted as suitable for all physical fitness levels, but it isn't recommended for those with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers, given the swimming and movement involved. Families can join with infants, who are required to sit on an adult's lap.

Pack a towel, swimsuit, and a change of clothes, since both cenote visits involve getting in the water and there's no guarantee of time to dry off before redressing. Life vests are provided and mandatory for the swims. Note that backpacks are no longer permitted inside Chichen Itza, so it's worth traveling light and bringing only essentials for that portion of the visit, since anything you can't carry in hand will need to stay behind.

The included Mexican buffet and on-board drinks cover the meal itself, but beverages consumed during that meal are not included, so budget for drinks at the table separately. Also excluded is the site preservation tax collected at Chichen Itza — 15 USD per adult and 10 USD per child, paid directly on location rather than bundled into the tour price.
