Holbox Mosquito Adventure by ferry from Riviera Maya & Tulum

Holbox Mosquito Adventure by ferry from Riviera Maya & Tulum

Holbox is a small Caribbean island off the northern tip of the Yucatán, reachable only by boat, and this trip gets you there with an early start toward the port of Chiquilá before boarding the ferry across. The island itself has no cars on its sandy streets, so once you land the day continues on foot, by bicycle, or in a shared golf cart, with a guide leading a two-hour exploration that takes in the town's murals, its low-key waterfront, and a walk out to Punta Mosquitos.

The ferry crossing itself is part of the experience, with Holbox's colorful buildings coming into view as you approach. On the island, the group spends time wandering pedestrian-only streets lined with local shops and painted murals, moving at the relaxed pace the island is known for whether that means walking, biking, or riding along in the golf cart. Lunch is served at a local restaurant built around regional dishes, giving the group a chance to sit down after the morning's exploring before the tour turns toward its second big stop.

That second stop is Punta Mosquito, a sandbar where the shallow water lies so still it mirrors the sky, creating the sense of the horizon dissolving between sea and clouds. The walk out onto the sandbar puts you in calm, ankle-to-knee-deep water with turquoise tones shifting with the light, and the spot is noted as being quieter and less crowded than the town center, making it a favorite for photos, particularly around sunrise or sunset. Between the town wander and this stretch of sandbar, the day balances a cultural, small-town feel with a stretch of open, natural scenery.

This tour fits travelers who want an island day that mixes light activity, walking, cycling, or riding a golf cart, with a good amount of unstructured time to look around and take photos, rather than a tightly packed schedule. It is rated suitable for all physical fitness levels but is not recommended for those with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers. Groups should also note that the golf cart option requires three people to use it as a standard inclusion; two travelers wanting it to themselves take on an extra charge of thirty US dollars. What distinguishes this trip from a simple beach day is the pairing of Holbox's small-town streets with the more surreal, mirror-like water at Punta Mosquito.

Dress for a day that moves between town streets and shallow water: comfortable clothes and shoes, a swimsuit, a towel, and a change of clothes, along with biodegradable insect repellent and sunscreen. Because of pickup logistics and traffic, the full day can run past twelve hours, and pickup itself happens in stages, with smaller vehicles collecting travelers first and bringing them to a final meeting point where the main bus takes over for the rest of the route.

For those staying somewhere the vehicles cannot reach directly, downtown hotels and Airbnbs among them, set meeting points are used instead: in Cancún, in front of the lobby of Smart Cancún by Oasis on Tulum Avenue; in Playa del Carmen, at Coco Bongo; and in Tulum, at the main gate of the Super Aki market on the federal avenue, since there is no direct hotel or Airbnb pickup there. Pickup times are set according to location and start at 6:00 am, and travelers who have not provided a pickup location are asked to get in touch as soon as possible, since the service cannot otherwise account for them.

The included items cover two hours of golf cart or bicycle rental, round-trip transportation and the ferry ticket to Holbox, the visit to Punta Mosquitos, a box breakfast of sandwich, juice, and fruit, a bilingual guide, and lunch with a dish of your choosing plus one beverage, either soda or beer. Not included are any additional drinks at the restaurant beyond that and the dock tax, listed separately at six US dollars per person.
