Small group tour to Chichen Itza early access + Cenote + Ekbalam

Chichen Itza draws crowds by mid-morning, so this small-group tour is built around beating them there. The day combines an early arrival at the ruins with a swim at Cenote Hubiku and a stop at the lesser-visited site of Ek Balam, all covered by land transportation with a guide who works in English throughout. Rather than the souvenir-stop format used by some cheaper operators, the itinerary is structured as a guided history and culture experience, with the group moving through both archaeological zones on foot alongside a professional guide.

The morning begins at Chichen Itza just as the site opens, giving the group roughly two and a half hours there before the bulk of visitors arrive. About an hour and forty-five minutes of that time is spent walking the grounds with the guide, taking in structures such as La Iglesia, Las Monjas, and the Observatory, along with one of the two cenotes located inside the ruins themselves. The walk continues past the Kukulkan Castle — with room to photograph it without the usual crowds — the Temple of a Thousand Columns, the Jaguar Temple, and the largest ball-game court built by the Maya. The remaining forty-five minutes are left open, so travelers can wander on their own, take more photos, or browse souvenirs sold inside the site before regrouping.

From Chichen Itza, the group heads to Cenote Hubiku, an underground cenote where stalactites hang over the water and swimming is part of the stop, followed by a regional buffet lunch served at the cenote's restaurant — about ninety minutes are set aside for the swim and meal together. The last stop is Ek Balam, a Yucatec Maya site set back in the jungle and less trafficked than Chichen Itza, known for its detailed carvings. Here travelers can climb the Acropolis, the tallest structure on the site, before the group heads back toward the coast.

The pace and structure suit travelers who want the archaeology and history explained rather than glossed over, and who don't mind a long day on the road to get it — total time, including transportation back to the hotel, runs between eleven and twelve hours depending on where you're staying. Climbing the Acropolis at Ek Balam and moving through Chichen Itza on foot calls for at least moderate fitness, and the operator flags the tour as not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Infants are welcome but must sit on an adult's lap for the ride.

Travelers staying in Playa del Carmen are picked up between 6:00 and 7:00 am, while those in Akumal and Tulum are collected between 6:30 and 7:00 am. Anyone staying in Tulum Downtown or the Tulum Hotel Zone meets the group directly at the entrance to the Super Aki supermarket in Tulum at 7:00 am, since hotel pickup isn't offered in that area. The route runs between the Vidanta area and Tulum's downtown, and the tour does not operate between Puerto Morelos and the Cancun area.
