Turtles & Tulum Ruins! With Cenote from Tulum City

Tulum draws travelers for two very different reasons: its cliffside Maya ruins overlooking the Caribbean, and the calm bay of Akumal a short drive south, where wild sea turtles feed in the shallows year-round. This full-day outing links both in a single itinerary that pairs a guided walk through history with a snorkel among the turtles, plus a stop at an underground cenote for good measure. It's built for anyone who wants Tulum's biggest draws covered in one trip rather than stitched together from separate bookings.

The day opens at the archaeological site of Tulum, one of the few Maya cities built directly on the coastline, its stone structures set above turquoise water. A bilingual guide leads the group through the ruins for about an hour, explaining the history and significance of the site within Maya culture, followed by a further hour of free time to wander and take in the views at your own pace. Before moving on, there's a quick stop at the oversized Tulum sign for a photo, the kind of marker that tells you you've properly arrived.

From there the group heads toward Akumal, where the itinerary allows around two hours for lunch and the snorkel outing itself. Akumal's bay is shallow and calm, ideal for spotting the sea turtles that live and feed among its seagrass beds, and the guide positions the group at the spots where sightings are most likely, so you're watching the animals move through their own environment rather than a staged encounter. Snorkel gear, including mask, snorkel tube and a life vest, is provided and the life vest must be worn in the water. A box lunch of juice, fruit, a sandwich and a cookie is included alongside the snorkeling, and the day also includes a Mexican buffet lunch. On the way through Tulum, there's a short stop at the giant blue letters as well.

The last stop is the cenote Nohoch, an underground freshwater cenote connected to the network of rivers that runs beneath the Riviera Maya. After the salt water and sun of Akumal, the cool, still water underground is a natural place to end the day, with roughly an hour set aside for the swim.

Drinks at the restaurant aren't included in the price, and the Tulum Ruins preservation tax, charged separately at 25 USD per person, is not covered either, so budget for that on top of what you've already paid.
